Terry Carlson was trained as an Irlen Screener in 2008 and an Irlen Diagnostician in 2011. She also has a Masters in Special Education/Endorsement in Reading. She has been teaching in the public-school system for over 20 years, in the secondary Special Education Literacy Programs. Terry was introduced to the Irlen overlays when she was searching for specific interventions when student’s progress stalled. She was given a set of overlays by the literacy coach, placed them on the text that the students were reading and they immediately reported: “the words don’t move anymore, I can see the words clearly now.” They then advanced quickly once this barrier was removed. In some cases, some students were promoted out of special education. In The Money Hour segment today, Terry talks about how struggles with reading and concentration may be linked to visual perceptual problems.
